How to Change an Ignition Switch on a Car

To change an ignition switch on a car is quite easy using a video guide or clear instructions. There are instances where the ignition switch can be changed without removing the dash board. To get the job done, you need the replacement ignition switch, ratchet, self-powered test light, screw driver and a small piece of wire if the ignition switch is dashboard mounted. The instructions are as follows: To remove the ignition switch which is dash-mounted, start by removing the dashboard carefully. Removing the small screws on the underside then prying. Do not pry too hard since the plastic can easily brake. Once the dashboard is out, remove the tumbler or the lock mechanism. Insert the small piece of wire into the tumbler then turn the key. This will make the tumbler to pull out. Disconnect the wires leading to the ignition switch then replace the current switch with the new one.
