How to Change an Ignition Switch on a Car

To change an ignition switch on a car is quite easy using a video guide or clear instructions. There are instances where the ignition switch can be changed without removing the dash board. To get the job done, you need the replacement ignition switch, ratchet, self-powered test light, screw driver and a small piece of wire if the ignition switch is dashboard mounted. The instructions are as follows:

To remove the ignition switch which is dash-mounted, start by removing the dashboard carefully. Removing the small screws on the underside then prying. Do not pry too hard since the plastic can easily brake. Once the dashboard is out, remove the tumbler or the lock mechanism. Insert the small piece of wire into the tumbler then turn the key. This will make the tumbler to pull out. Disconnect the wires leading to the ignition switch then replace the current switch with the new one. Following the reverse order of removal, reconnect the wires, return the tumbler then dashboard.

To remove the ignition switch that is on the steering Column, first remove the steering column housing. You can pry it off after removing the screws holding it to place. Then remove the fasteners holding the steering column to the dashboard. These can either be screws or bolts. Drop the column down. Halfway down the steering column, you will see the wiring harness connected to the ignition switch. Detach it. Test the ignition switch using the test light. Connect the ground clip of the test light to a ground connector then the other clip to the start terminal. When you turn the key to the start position, the light of the tester should glow. Repeat the step above but this time clip the test light to the run terminal. When the key is in the off position, the light on the tester should not glow.

NB: You can refer to the car manual in order to locate the start terminal and run terminal.
If the switch passes this test, then you do not need to replace it since it is not the problem. However, if it fails the test remove it by detaching it from the steering column. It may be secured by small nuts or screws. Replace the ignition switch with a new one. Position it well making sure the holes are aligned so that you can secure it with the fasteners. Attach the wiring harness followed by the steering column. Ensure it is in the upright position and all fasteners are previously removed are replaced. Return the housing to its position.
