Stretch marks are often caused by rapid weight gain or weight loss. Most people think that it is pregnancy alone that causes them. Unknown to many, they can also be caused by exercising too much. So beware, while looking for health and beauty, you may gaining unwanted marks on your skin.

Rapid weight gain or swift muscle development causes the skin to stretch beyond its breaking point thus, producing those little marks on the skin. Weight loss on the other hand, makes the skin to wrinkle more than producing those little marks.

There are women out there who love their marks since they view them as an honour; mostly to motherhood. There are some people however who would do anything to get rid of them.

Prevention is better than cure and in this case, it no different. These marks tend to occur on dry skin. Proper skin care should be adhered to in order to avoid dry skin. You should eat a well-balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Avoid substances that dehydrate the skin such as alcohol and caffeine products. Nourish the skin by ensuring your diet has fruits, vegetables, nuts and oily fish.

Apply skin products containing vitamin E or cocoa butter. These are gentle even on sensitive skin. The sooner they are used, the better since they improve the appearance of stretch marks. Use dry oil body spray just after using the shower when the skin is still warm. Olive oil has been praised by many people and it is suggested that you include it in your diet as well as rubbing it on the affected skin area. If you do not mind the smell of Vick’s vapour rub, it is good for treating stretch marks.

You can reduce the appearance of stretch marks by removing dead skin cells. Gentle ex-foliation while using a body scrub will do wonders. If you are using ex foliation shower products, ensure you follow the product instructions. Some of these products are not meant for daily use. Sunscreen is another effective method you can use to reduce the appearance of these marks. This is because they are less noticeable on tanned skin.

If however, you have tried all skin care tips, remedies, products and beauty tips available in the market and still are not able to get rid of them, and you feel your self-esteem and body image are on the line, then it is time for surgery. The surgical procedures include microdermabrasion or laser treatment. Their success however is dependent of skin type, age and diet of an individual. The ultimate choice is yours given that these treatments are expensive and have no guarantee of success.
