How to choose a suitable career
What is a
career? A career is a job undertaken for a significant period of a person's
life and with prospects for progress. It includes education, training, and work experience.
Before you settle into a career, there are a few things that you must know.
Keep in mind that this is what you shall be doing for a living and possibly,
for the rest of your life; you should therefore choose a career that is going
to work for you.
Many people end
up in careers they don’t like and end up feeling trapped in them. If you had a
chance to choose or change your career, there are certain things that you
should keep in mind. Use the check-list below to help you make a wise decision
before you settle. You may print it out and fill it in after giving it a
thought.
The check-list
On a scale of
1-10, rate the careers you are thinking of where 1 is the least rating while 10
being the highest rating.
Career: List the careers
you are thinking of in this column.
Job satisfaction (JS): is
this your dream job? Is it something you would enjoy doing even if you are not
getting paid? Is it something you may consider doing?
Remuneration (R): how is
the compensation package? Compare the salary plus benefits.
Work environment (WE):
this is more than just the location of the work space; it is about the
atmosphere. Think of the kind of people you will interact with
- If it is a place you already know, how are the staff? Do they generally look motivated? How well do they speak of the place?
- Do you think you can fit in well in that career path?
Job type (JT): job types
range from freelance, short contracts to permanent jobs. Depending on what you
would prefer for your ideal job, rate the careers.
Continuation (C): does
this career lead to a long term goal?
Total: add the ratings to
give you a total Mark. The career with the highest total mark is the career you
are most comfortable with and one that will give you a great sense of
achievement.

Be honest with
yourself as you fill out the check-list. Remember, it is supposed to help you
make a decision you will not regret in the future. There are people who go for
remuneration over job satisfaction. But if you truly want to be happy, it is
better to go for job satisfaction and grow in your career. The choices you make today will have an
impact on your tomorrow.
There are times
when your career is not in line with what you studied in college. If it is
something that you love doing, then it would be wise to get some form of
certification for the same. Otherwise, if you are scouting for a career in
order to guide you on what course to take in college, then this is your chance
to make a wise choice. There will be no going back.
The right time
to make a career move is now. Do not wait; for time waits for no one. The
earlier you make your move, the sooner you start reaping the benefits.
Remember, time lost can never be recovered. Making the right career choice is
even better than just making a career move.
