Presidents Obama and Uhuru on Gay rights during a press conference in Kenya
In a joint press conference held on
Saturday 25th July 2015 in Nairobi, the Unites States of America
president Barrack Obama lectured the president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta on gay
rights.
"When you start treating
people differently not because of any harm they are doing to anybody, but
because they are different, that's the path whereby freedoms begin to erode,"
he continued to say "And bad things happen."
Despite many Kenya leaders
discouraging Obama on discussing gay rights when he visited the country for the
first time, Obama did not shy off. In fact, he equated legalized discrimination
of gays to legalized racism in America.
"And when a government gets
in a habit of people treating people differently, those habits can spread. As
an African-American, I am painfully aware of what happens when people are
treated differently under the law." Obama stated.
Kenyatta made it very clear that
although the U.S and Kenya share many common values and goals, gay rights is definitely
not one of them.
"The fact of the matter is
Kenya and the U.S. share so many values: common love for democracy,
entrepreneurship, value for families -- these are some things that we
share," Kenyatta said. "But there are some things that we must admit
we don't share. Our culture, our societies don't accept."
In deed there are some cultures that
are so different between the two countries. Many Kenyans in America go through
culture shock before they adjust. The shock is not only with the climate, food,
but also with values and beliefs in general.
"It is very difficult for us
to be able to impose on people that which they themselves do not accept,"
Kenyatta continued. "This is why I repeatedly say for Kenyans today the
(gay rights issue) is generally a non-issue. We want to focus on other
areas."
Those in attendance applauded President
Kenyatta when he made this statement. Perhaps this could be seen as unity in
thought when it comes to gay rights in Kenya. It is indeed true that the topic
is still a taboo to many Kenyans. In some quarters, talking about it can even raise
eyebrows. People tend to shy away from the topic. Besides, there are more impending issues that
Kenya needs to deal with before they get to gay rights. For instance, Kenya
needs to deal with corruption so that when they implement certain Laws, they
are adhered to.
And sure enough, other than the
gay rights talk, the two presidents also talked about on Corruption in Kenya. Coincidentally, Obama’s father feuded with
Kenyatta’s father back in the 1960’s. This happened when Barack Obama Sr. criticized
the Kenyan government’s corruption and abuse of power when he was working in
the Ministry of Tourism as economist in Kenya. This led to President Jomo
Kenyatta firing him.
The Obama’s seem to be reading
from the same script. At least Obama will not be fired this time because he is
the president.
From the time President Obama landed
in Kenya to the time of this press conference, he
visited the Bomb Blast Memorial Park in Nairobi and had dinner with his Kenyan
relatives on Friday evening.
