Health Foods that are Overrated
So how can health foods be overrated? They are healthy so the more they are used them the better! Wrong! Too much of anything is poisonous. This topic has the potential of sparking controversy. Different people hold different opinions on food stuffs. A vegetarian for instance cannot have the same view as a non-vegetarian. On the same note, those who believe natural and/or organic foods are the best would certainly not be on the same level as one who eats whatever is available.
However, there are some foods that cut across all sorts of diets. For instance, almost everyone knows soya. When soya was determined as a healthy source of high protein, the world went bazaar. Almost every product was being fortified with soya. Go to Africa and you will be amazed; those who decide to go soya, do so in everything they eat. The market is saturated with products such as soya milk, soya flour, soya drink to substitute coffee, soya chunks to substitute meat, soya mince to substitute meat mince, and so on.
The problem with this is that there are those who alter their entire diet from breakfast to dinner in order to incorporate soya in every meal. You will find a family having soya milk with bread made with soya flour for breakfast, soya chinks and rice for lunch then soya mince with chapatti made with soya flour for dinner. Just before bedtime, the family is most likely to have soya drink. The only alterations made to the diet are a different soya product at every meal. If there was a soya fruit, then they would add this to their meals. Friends teach friends how to make the excellent meal using these products. Recipes are exchanged from the office, to church to play grounds and to forth. If this is not overrated, then nothing is. Reading an article on the disadvantages may certainly change your mind.
The main cause of this is advertising or word of mouth, and this pleases manufactures and producers of the product. The benefits of soya are numerous and once you hear about them, you can also be tempted to go on a full soya diet.
This is not to say that soya is the only overrated food; most organic foods are overrated, even baby meals are being fortified with organic foods. Another class of food which is overrated is genetically modified food. Using these foods moderately could prove very healthy but be fully informed.
At the end of the day, you have to make the judgement. It is up to you to assess your own diet and see for yourself if you are overdoing any health foods or not. Think of the both the good and bad sides of it then decide on how best to adjust. So do not stop the use of such foods altogether but rather think of the implications and ensure that your diet is always balanced.
